Catamaran charter in Phuket works because the same boat handles both an island day and a week on the Andaman Sea. Twin hulls barely rock at anchor, so children and anyone wary of seasickness stay comfortable, and there is enough deck for sunbathing as well as lunch in the shade.

There are three models. The 13.7-metre Leopard 45 has a forward cockpit and four cabins, each with its own bathroom, takes up to 15 guests and carries a kayak and SUP. The Lagoon 450, just under 14 metres, also seats 15 by day, and its raised flybridge helm gives the best view of the Phang Nga karsts; a tender and kayak come aboard. The 18.3-metre Sunreef 60 is the premium option: up to 20 day guests, an upper lounge, a crew of three including a chef, and a set of water toys.

Overnight, each sleeps up to eight in four cabins, which means two or three couples or a large family. For a day out to Racha or Phang Nga the Leopard or Lagoon is plenty; for a honeymoon or a no-compromise holiday, look at the Sunreef.

Where you go

Charter catamarans are kept at Yacht Haven, Ao Po Grand Marina, Royal Phuket Marina and Boat Lagoon on the east coast, while day trips to Racha often board at Chalong Pier. A day sail heads for Racha Yai and Racha Noi, Koh Hae or the Phang Nga coves with kayaking at Koh Hong. A week usually strings together Koh Yao Noi, Railay near Krabi, Koh Hong and Phi Phi, anchoring each night.

When to go

November to April brings the dry season and even seas, ideal for both day sails and a week aboard. From May to October the west coast is unsettled, though a catamaran can retreat into sheltered Phang Nga Bay. A day trip typically sets off around nine and returns by sunset, while a week begins with handover at the marina.

Catamaran charter in Phuket: FAQ

How many people fit on a catamaran in Phuket?

By day the Leopard 45 and Lagoon 450 take up to 15 guests and the Sunreef 60 up to 20. Overnight, any of the three sleeps up to eight in four cabins. For a day sail, groups of ten to twelve usually find it most comfortable.

Can we live aboard for a week?

Yes, it is the classic format: a loop through Phang Nga, Krabi and Phi Phi with nights off Koh Yao Noi, Railay and Koh Hong. The Sunreef 60 already has a chef in the crew, and one can be added on the other two.

Will it roll?

Less than a monohull: a catamaran sits on two hulls and hardly heels. In the dry season the sea is usually smooth, and during the monsoon the captain picks sheltered bays.

Can we swim in Maya Bay?

No. Maya Bay is inside a national park, swimming is banned and the bay closes each year for recovery. The captain usually plans the swim stop in neighbouring Pileh Lagoon instead.
