Proposal on a yacht

Just the two of you, open water and the moment you have been rehearsing for months.

Find My Yacht

A yacht is one of the few places where a proposal can be truly private and still feel spectacular. There are no passers-by, no waiters hovering and no strangers filming on their phones. The crew is there to help, not to watch, and once the boat leaves the marina the only audience is your partner, the sea and, if you want one, a photographer who knows when to stay out of sight.

Most proposals are planned around a two- to three-hour charter that ends at sunset. The golden light flatters every photo, the heat has gone out of the day and the yacht can anchor in a quiet bay for the question itself. A smaller motor yacht or a sailing yacht keeps the setting intimate, while a catamaran gives you a wide, stable foredeck that is easier to decorate and safer to kneel on.

We take your brief, ask local charter companies and owners which yachts are free on your date and send you options with prices and terms. Flowers, a cake, champagne or a photographer can usually be arranged through the operator, and each offer states exactly what is included. The same approach works for a honeymoon: a slow day of swimming and lunch on board, or several nights cruising the islands.

How to plan it

  1. 01

    Time it with the sunset

Check the sunset time for your exact date and book a slot that starts about two hours earlier. That leaves time to relax, swim or have a drink before the yacht anchors for the moment itself.

  2. 02

    Brief the captain in secret

Share your plan with the operator before the day, not on the dock. Agree on where to anchor, when to cue music or champagne, and a signal so the crew knows when to give you space.

  3. 03

    Keep the ring safe

Decks are smooth, gaps are real and the sea does not give rings back. Keep the box in a zipped pocket, and propose on a flat area of deck rather than at the rail or on the swim platform.

  4. 04

    Decide on a photographer early

A hidden photographer on board captures the reaction you will want to keep. Ask for one when you send the request, as good photographers book up and need space on the guest list.

  5. 05

Have a plan B for the weather

Wind and swell can change a sunset plan. Ask what happens if the captain cancels for safety, whether the date can be moved and what the terms are, and keep a flexible second date in mind.

Extras you can request

  • Flowers and rose petals on deck
  • Champagne or sparkling wine
  • Celebration cake
  • Professional photographer or videographer
  • Dinner or canapés served on board
  • Live musician, such as a violinist or saxophonist
  • Hotel or airport transfers

Availability and prices of extras depend on the yacht and are listed in your offer.

Questions

Can the crew help keep the proposal a surprise?

Yes. Captains are used to proposals and will usually go along with a cover story. Share your plan with us when you send the request so the operator knows about it in advance, rather than mentioning it on the dock in front of your partner.

Are flowers, champagne and decorations included?

It depends on the yacht. Some packages include basic drinks or simple decorations, others charge for every extra. Each written offer lists exactly what is included and what can be added, so you can compare like for like.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day?

The captain has the final say on safety and may postpone or cancel the trip. Rescheduling and refund terms vary by operator and are set out in the offer, so read them before paying the deposit and, if you can, keep a second date free.

Can we book a yacht for our honeymoon too?

Yes. Couples often choose a day charter with swimming and lunch, or several nights on a catamaran or gulet. Tell us your dates and destination, and we will ask local operators what is available and send you options.
