A motor yacht charter on the Amalfi Coast & Capri almost always begins with one word: gozzo. That is the high-bowed local boat Sorrento has built for centuries, now fitted with strong engines, an awning and a vast sunpad. On a coast where the SS163 clogs every summer and Positano has almost nowhere to park, it is the most practical way around — a single day can take in the Furore fjord, the Li Galli islets and lunch on Capri.

The Mimì Libeccio 9.5 is a compact gozzo from a Neapolitan yard for up to 10 guests, with cushioned pads fore and aft, shade and a little cabin with a toilet. From Positano it reaches Capri in roughly 40 minutes, and its skippers have often grown up on this shore and know exactly where to eat in Nerano or Marina del Cantone. The Apreamare 38, a Sorrento-built gozzo of about 11.5 metres with a teak deck, takes 12 and suits groups who find a small boat cramped but have no need for a big yacht.

The Pershing 62 has a different temperament altogether: 19 metres, around 40 knots and a sporty profile. It links Positano, Capri and Ischia in one day, and three cabins plus an air-conditioned saloon make a night at anchor off Capri easy. Both gozzi usually carry a four-hour minimum, while the Pershing tends to go out for full days with a captain and deckhand.

Where you go

The gozzi pick up in Sorrento at Marina Piccola, at the Spiaggia Grande pier in Positano or in Amalfi; the Pershing can also board in Salerno. The classic day strings together Positano, Li Galli and Capri with the Faraglioni and the Green and White grottoes, and the faster yacht adds Ischia.

Marinas

  • Sorrento (Marina Piccola)
  • Positano (Spiaggia Grande pier)
  • Amalfi
  • Salerno (Marina d'Arechi)
  • Naples (Molo Luise)

When to go

Boats operate from May to early October, at their best in June and September. In August Capri is packed, so leave early before queues form at the grottoes. A four-hour slot suits Positano and Li Galli; for Capri, take the whole day.

Motor yacht charter on the Amalfi Coast & Capri: FAQ

What is a gozzo, and why choose one over a regular yacht?

It is the traditional boat of the Bay of Naples and Sorrento, with a high bow and classic lines. Modern versions add powerful engines, an awning and big sunpads, which makes them better suited to a coastal day than a bulky yacht — they slip easily into small coves and up to the grottoes.

Will we get into the Blue Grotto?

Only if the sea allows: it closes whenever there is a swell. Entry is by small rowing boat, so guests transfer at the mouth and pay for tickets on the spot. If it is shut, the captain will show you the Green and White grottoes instead.

Can we fit Capri and Ischia into one day?

On the Pershing 62, yes — around 40 knots lets you link Positano, Capri and Ischia in a single outing. On a gozzo it is better to stick to Capri and the coast so the day is not spent travelling.
